The unexpected move comes despite the Australian guiding Spurs to their first major trophy in years, a moment celebrated by fans and seen as a major milestone in the club’s history.
In a statement, the club cited a “review of performances and significant reflection” as the basis for the decision. While Postecoglou was praised for his role in ending the club’s silverware drought, concerns were raised about Tottenham’s inconsistent Premier League performance.
“Ange brought back our traditional attacking style and led us to a memorable Europa League win in Bilbao,” the statement said, acknowledging his impact since joining from Celtic in the summer of 2023.
That European triumph placed Postecoglou among an elite group of Spurs managers—joining the ranks of Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw as only the third in club history to secure a European title. Yet, the club’s hierarchy emphasized that the success in Europe could not overshadow struggles in the league.
They noted a significant downturn in league results after a promising start, including a record-low finish in the Premier League last season.
“Despite mitigating factors such as injuries and our focus on Europe, we believe it’s vital to perform strongly on all fronts. A new approach is needed to meet our ambitions for next season and beyond,” the statement added.
The decision, the board said, was not made lightly or hastily, but reflects the club’s commitment to long-term success across all competitions.
Postecoglou was credited with assembling a young, talented squad and laying a strong foundation. However, the board believes a new leadership direction is essential to elevate their Premier League fortunes.
