The incident occurred when two men riding a motorcycle allegedly snatched a phone from a pedestrian and threatened to stab the victim. Officers on patrol in the area swiftly intervened, chasing the suspects as they attempted to escape.

“One of the suspects was fatally shot during the confrontation,” said Nairobi Police Commander George Sedah. “The other fled on foot after abandoning the motorbike, and we are currently hunting him down.”

Police recovered the stolen mobile phone, which was returned to its owner. A knife believed to have been used in the attempted robbery, along with the motorcycle, was taken in as evidence.

The incident comes as authorities ramp up security in Eastleigh ahead of Eid celebrations, amid rising concern over a spike in phone thefts and robberies carried out by motorbike-riding gangs.

“We live in constant fear, especially after dark. These criminals strike and disappear in seconds,” said local shopkeeper Ahmed Noor. “We hope this serves as a warning.”

Commander Sedah assured residents that police have intensified patrols and deployed undercover officers throughout the city to tackle street crime.

“Our priority is to ensure public safety,” he stated. “Several suspects have already been apprehended and charged.”
