More than 30 MPs aligned with President William Ruto have launched a scathing attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of plotting in vain to derail Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.

The lawmakers, largely from the Mt Kenya region, dismissed Gachagua as politically irrelevant, saying he lacks the influence to prevent Ruto from securing a second term.
Led by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, the group condemned Gachagua’s alleged reliance on tribal politics, calling it a backward and divisive tactic with no place in modern leadership.
Ichung’wah, speaking during an economic empowerment event hosted by Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, said Gachagua had proven himself unfit for leadership and even his own family should be ashamed of his behavior.
“We impeached him for a reason. His reckless words and tribal rhetoric are a disgrace,” Ichung’wah said at the event, which was also attended by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi.
MPs present included Florence Jematia, Sabina Chege, Japheth Nyakundi, Reuben Kiborek, Ann Wamuratha, Joseph Wainaina, Carolyne Ngelechei, Adams Kipsanai, Anthony Wainaina, and many others from across the country.
The legislators criticized Gachagua for what they termed outdated, ethnic-based politics and accused him of glorifying the chaos of the 2007/2008 post-election violence.
“A man who finds pride in our nation’s darkest moments has no moral authority to lead,” Ichung’wah said, warning that if Gachagua led the opposition, they would be defeated early in the 2027 campaign.
“We don’t even need President Ruto to beat them. Even Oscar Sudi could win against them,” he added.
Ichung’wah accused Gachagua of opposing Kenya Kwanza’s development initiatives without offering any alternative agenda, saying he constantly fixates on President Ruto instead of discussing policy.
“Ruto is the President of the Republic. He cannot be your only political agenda,” Ichung’wah stated.
He urged Mt Kenya residents and the wider Kenyan public to reject Gachagua’s divisive politics and ignore what he called a “group of recycled politicians” surrounding him.
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi sharply criticised Gachagua for claiming that Ruto was misusing public funds for local empowerment initiatives. Sudi clarified that his projects are personally funded, including support from friends in Tanzania.
“If Gachagua keeps disrespecting the President, we will deal with him politically,” Sudi warned.
Several Mt Kenya MPs expressed frustration with what they termed Gachagua’s intimidation tactics, promising to counter his influence head-on. Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi pledged full support for Ruto and predicted a humiliating loss for Gachagua in 2027.
“He must learn to respect elected leaders, starting with the President,” said Wamumbi.
Finance CS Mbadi added his voice, criticizing Gachagua for fueling ethnic division and bitterness.
“It’s embarrassing for a former Deputy President to be this petty and tribal,” Mbadi said.
Sabina Chege praised President Ruto’s development agenda and condemned Gachagua for undermining even Mt Kenya’s own artists and creatives.
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii praised Ruto for spearheading inclusive development across the country, saying Rift Valley stands firmly behind him.
Other MPs lauded Oscar Sudi’s empowerment programmes and pointed to Ruto’s achievements in agriculture, especially reforms in the sugar and coffee sectors, as signs of real progress.
Reuben Kiborek took a personal jab at Gachagua, saying, “He’s such a toxic leader that even his own family should consider impeaching him. He is unfit to lead anyone.”
