Nine civilians have reportedly been killed and four others injured after a Russian drone struck a passenger bus in northeastern Ukraine, according to local authorities.

The attack occurred Saturday morning in the town of Bilopillia, Sumy region, as the bus was en route to the regional capital, near the Russian border.
The incident came just hours after Russia and Ukraine held their first face-to-face peace talks since 2022. While the negotiations yielded no major progress, both sides agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war.
Ukraine’s national police condemned the strike as a “cynical war crime,” accusing Russian forces of once again targeting civilian infrastructure. Russia, without referencing the bus incident specifically, claimed it had struck a “military staging area” in the Sumy region.
Sumy regional head Oleh Hryhorov said preliminary reports indicate a Russian Lancet drone struck the bus at 6:17 a.m. local time, calling the attack “inhumane.”

The region has been a focal point in recent cross-border hostilities. Ukraine launched offensives into Russia’s Kursk region from Sumy last August, but Russian forces have since pushed back and escalated drone and artillery attacks.
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
