Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway will experience a rise in toll fees, as the government has revised the rates, according to a Special Gazette notice issued on December 19, 2023, by Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen.
In exercising the powers conferred by section 4B(3) of the Public Roads Tolls Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport approved the new toll rates for the Nairobi Expressway. The change is attributed to the depreciation of the Shilling against the US Dollar.
Under the new rates, the minimum toll for using the Expressway is now Sh170, compared to the previous Sh120. For saloon cars, the maximum toll has increased to Sh500 from the earlier Sh360.
These toll rates are subject to future adjustments based not only on the prevailing exchange rate but also changes in the consumer price index (CPI).
The Nairobi Expressway, with a cost of Sh88 billion, features exits at Mlolongo, Standard Gauge Railway, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Eastern Bypass, Southern Bypass, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie Avenue, Museum Hill, and Westlands.
The revised toll charges are as follows:
- Westlands to Mlolongo and Syokimau: Sh500
- Westlands to JKIA and Easter Bypass: Sh410
- Westlands to Southern Bypass: Sh330
- Westlands to Haile Selassie and Capital Centre: Sh250
- Westlands to Museum Hill: Sh170
