President William Ruto is set to lead the nation in commemorating this year’s Labour Day celebrations, which will also mark the Central Organization of Trade Unions’ (COTU-K) Diamond Jubilee, on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.

Organized by COTU-K, the event will celebrate six decades of advocating for workers’ rights in Kenya, making this year’s observance particularly meaningful as it combines the annual Labour Day with the union’s 60th anniversary.
As outlined in the official programme, workers, union leaders, and invited guests will begin gathering early in the morning. A vibrant procession, featuring both pedestrian and mechanized floats, is expected to proceed along Lang’ata Road and at Uchumi Parking, led by the Administration Police Band.
Labour Cabinet Secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua will first visit COTU-K’s headquarters in Gikomba to sign the Labour Day visitors’ book before proceeding to the main event at Uhuru Gardens. He will be joined by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli and other senior union officials.
President Ruto is expected to arrive at the venue at 9:30 a.m., where he will be welcomed by CS Mutua and the COTU leadership.
The celebrations will feature various entertainment acts, interfaith prayers, and a ceremonial workers’ march-past, followed by speeches from COTU leaders, the Labour CS, and President Ruto.
As the event’s Chief Guest, President Ruto is expected to address the nation on key labour-related matters, including wage policies, job creation, industrial relations, and the government’s broader labour agenda.
This year’s observance takes place against a backdrop of growing demands from workers’ unions for salary adjustments and improved working conditions, amid economic challenges and rising living costs.
