A High Court in Abuja has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of popular gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging for murder.
The judgment, delivered by Justice Nwosu-iheme, comes three years after Osinachi’s death which occurred on April 8, 2022.
The case has attracted attention due to Osinachi’s popularity in Nigerian gospel music and the Christian community.
Police had arrested Mr. Nwachukwu after his wife died in a hospital in Abuja.
Initial reports had suggested that the 42-year-old woman was suffering from throat cancer, but her family denied this and claimed that she was a victim of domestic violence.
They accused her husband of abusing and causing his wife’s death.
The court later ordered that he be remanded in custody. Mr Peter Nwachukwu was charged with “acts of violence and assault on his wife with the knowledge that death would result from his actions.”
The prosecution called 17 witnesses, including two children, during the trial. 25 documents were also presented as evidence before the court.
The late Osinachi and her convicted husband Peter Nwachukwu were blessed with four children.
