Speaking on Monday during a funeral in Machakos, Kavindu criticized the demolitions for being carried out without notice, causing immense suffering to families.

“People are being evicted during the rainy season, with children involved—this is unacceptable,” she said.

County Lands Executive Nathaniel Nganga wa Ngangani echoed her concerns, noting that Governor Wavinya Ndeti and other local leaders have opposed the demolitions due to a lack of proper consultation between national and county governments.

Nganga described the demolitions as inhumane and called for a thorough investigation and dialogue before any further action. He also emphasized the need for compensation and relocation of affected residents.

The demolitions began in October 2023 after East African Portland Cement Company won a lengthy legal battle against the Aimi Ma Lukenya farmers’ group over a disputed 4,298-hectare parcel of land in Mavoko.

The Environment and Land Court dismissed the group’s case due to procedural failures, including not serving amended pleadings. Records also showed discrepancies in the title documents filed by the association.

The land dispute, which dates back to 2014, saw a restraining order issued in 2016 against the cement company. However, in October 2023, Justice Annet Nyukuri struck out the case, clearing the way for enforcement actions by the company.
