Dominic Maitha, the MCA for Muthwani ward, resurfaced on Wednesday evening, nearly 24 hours after his family had reported him missing at the Machakos police station.

On Thursday, Maitha spoke to The Star, assuring that he was safe. He denied the rumors of abduction.

“I’m fine and okay. I wasn’t abducted, but I was being followed by people on motorbikes,” Maitha explained during a phone interview on Thursday morning.

The Star contacted the MCA after noticing his phones, which were previously off when the missing persons report was filed, had been switched on.

Maitha explained that he had put his phones in flight mode and gone into hiding after evading individuals he suspected were hired goons following him on two motorbikes from Machakos town.

According to the MCA, three masked men followed him on the bikes after he left a hotel in Machakos town. He sought refuge in another hotel on the outskirts before heading to a safe location in Athi River.

“I was leaving a hotel in Machakos when I noticed a man standing by a wall, wearing a black hood. I saw him as my car headlights illuminated the area. I felt uneasy. The man then whistled, signaling, ‘He is here,'” Maitha said.

He added, “I immediately turned on my full headlights and saw two motorbikes—one was parked facing the exit to the Kathwanze-Kangundo road, while the other was on the opposite side of the road with a rider and passenger.”

Maitha grew suspicious when the man signaled to the others that he had been spotted.

“I quickly switched my phone to flight mode because I didn’t know who these people were. In these times, you can’t trust whether they are police officers or hired thugs. I then drove toward the Golf Club, took a U-turn at Kobil petrol station, and headed towards Nairobi,” he said.

After noticing the motorbikes following him, Maitha decided to stop at a nearby hotel to assess the situation.

He eventually drove to a hotel in Athi River, checking in around 1:00 am on Monday.

“I parked at the far end, booked a room, and slept there. I turned off my phones to ensure my safety and didn’t contact my wife or family. I was shaken by what I had experienced,” Maitha said.

He explained that he stayed in the hotel until 11:00 am on Wednesday, when hotel staff woke him up.
