UN Environment Summit Kicks Off with Over 5,000 Delegates at Gigiri

More than 5,000 delegates convened at Gigiri as the United Nations Environment Assembly commenced at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary, Soipan Tuya, announced that the sixth session of the UN Environment Assembly will see participation from over 5,000 delegates representing the 193 United Nations member states. CS Tuya will lead discussions on crucial environmental issues.

Heads of State and Government are expected to grace the event from February 26 to March 1. The assembly will also witness the involvement of experts, activists, and industry representatives.

The gathering is particularly significant given the global challenges of pollution, waste, biodiversity loss, and climate change, as highlighted by CS Tuya. It builds upon the outcomes of last year’s Africa Climate Summit.

UNEA, established in 2012 after the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, plays a vital role in addressing environmental concerns on a global scale. Over the years, it has tackled various issues, including combatting illegal wildlife trafficking and promoting sustainable urban mobility.

The focus of UNEA-6 will be on multilateral environmental agreements and their role in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions, significant progress has been made in environmental cooperation, with milestones like the recognition of the universal human right to a clean environment and the signing of the High Seas Treaty in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
