Several media outlets in the United States and Russia are reporting that talks to end the war in Ukraine are expected to begin this Tuesday in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US Ambassador to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz are all travelling to the Gulf country for preliminary talks.
On the Russian side, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, along with President Vladimir Putin’s adviser, Yuriy Ushakov, are expected to participate in the talks, according to Russian state media.
The diplomats represent Trump and Putin, following an initial phone conversation between the leaders last week. After the conversation, Trump said he looked forward to meeting with Vladimir Putin “soon.”
However, Ukraine has not been invited to the talks in Riyadh, which has raised concerns among European leaders. US Secretary of State Rubio said the talks would be “realistic” if they were to officially begin, but stressed that “we are not there yet.”
Rubio also said he doesn’t expect these talks to end the war immediately.
