The first victim, identified as James Mutembei, was found dead near a shopping centre shortly after consuming the alcohol at a nearby home. Police who visited the scene said he had been drinking with six others, all of whom were rushed to Mutuati Hospital before being referred to Nyambene Level Four Hospital in critical condition.

One of the patients, Kamenchu M’Mkinyeri, aged 70, later succumbed while undergoing treatment.

Officers raided the den where the group had consumed the brew—locally known as Musengeri—and seized 10 litres of the substance. The bodies of the two men were taken to the mortuary for postmortem examinations, while samples of the brew were sent to the Government Chemist for testing to determine the type of poison involved.

The remaining five victims are still receiving treatment under close medical supervision.

The incident comes as authorities intensify nationwide crackdowns on illicit brews, which have claimed numerous lives in recent months.

National Police Service spokesperson Michael Muchiri said the fight against illegal alcohol and drug abuse will continue, noting that enforcement teams have destroyed thousands of litres of illicit liquor and arrested dozens of brewers over the past three months.

He added that security agencies are also targeting drug trafficking networks, with recent operations leading to the seizure of large quantities of bhang worth millions of shillings and the arrest of several suspects.

Muchiri emphasized that the campaign is yielding results, with an increase in arrests and convictions, as the government seeks to dismantle supply chains fueling the spread of illicit alcohol and narcotics across Kenya.
