Two Children Killed in Kisumu After House Wall Collapses

Two children have died and another was seriously injured after a house wall caved in on them as they slept in Sondu town, Nyakach Sub-county, Kisumu County.

The incident happened on Friday night at around 11:45 p.m. in Kariobangi village, East Kadianga sub-location, local authorities said.

Officials reported that the three children had been left alone in the house when the wall suddenly collapsed, trapping them beneath the rubble.

Two of the victims, aged about 14 and 10, died at the scene despite efforts by neighbours who rushed in after hearing a loud crash and cries for help.

A third child, believed to be around 12 years old, survived but suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby health facility for treatment.

The matter was first reported by a village elder to the area chief, who quickly notified security agencies and coordinated emergency response efforts.

Police from Maraboi Police Station, together with local administration officers, visited the scene to assess the situation and launch investigations into the cause of the collapse.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Bethlehem Mortuary as inquiries continue, with the scene documented for further analysis.

Nyakach Assistant County Commissioner Orina Dawin urged residents to cooperate with investigators to ensure thorough inquiries.

He also called on the public to stay alert and report any unsafe structures or environmental hazards that could pose a danger.

Residents described the tragedy as heartbreaking, expressing concerns over the safety of some homes in the area, especially during the rainy season when weakened buildings are more prone to collapse.

Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the incident.
