Slovakia Prime Minister Critically Shot

A video has emerged showing Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico being rushed into the car after being shot. A Slovakian broadcaster, TA3, reported that Fico, aged 59, was wounded in the abdomen when four shots were fired near the House of Culture in Handlova, located about 93 miles from the capital. The incident occurred while Fico was engaging with his supporters. Authorities have apprehended a person in connection with the shooting.

An update shared on Fico’s Facebook page indicated that he suffered several gunshot wounds and is in a critical condition. He is being airlifted to Banská Bystrica for urgent medical care, as traveling to Bratislava would require more time due to the emergency nature of his treatment. His condition over the coming hours is pivotal.

This violent event in Slovakia unfolds just three weeks before the significant European Parliament elections, at a time when populist and far-right factions are expected to advance within the 27-member union.

Lubos Blaha, the Deputy Speaker of Slovakia’s Parliament, verified the occurrence during a parliamentary session and subsequently suspended the assembly until further notice, as reported by the Slovak news agency TASR.

In the wake of the shooting, Slovakia’s Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj-Eštok remarked that the nation is facing its darkest day in terms of democracy. He maintained his original statement: “For the first time in the 31 years of our democratic sovereign republic, someone has decided to express a political opinion not in an election but with a gun on the street,” as posted on his Facebook page.

Member of the opposition, Maria Kolikova, characterized the incident as a direct assault on Slovakia’s domestic stability.
