Senator Cheptumo passed away on February 16, 2025, while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
In a statement on Monday, former CS Simon Chelugui, who is also the chairman of the burial planning committee, announced that a church funeral service will be held in Nairobi on February 27, 2025, at Milimani AIC Church.

Chelugui also mentioned that there will be meetings on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Wednesday, Thursday, and Tuesday, February 25, 2025, starting at 4:30 p.m.
Additionally, meetings will be held concurrently in Kabarnet and at Cheptumo’s Tunoiwo home.
Chelugui described Senator Cheptumo as an influential figure who served Kenya in many roles, including as a skilled lawyer, a strategic politician, a philanthropist, and a dedicated member of the AIC Church.

“He impacted many lives, and his legacy stands as a symbol of hard work, humility, and commitment to democratic principles, justice, and fairness,” Chelugui noted.
“Coming from humble beginnings, he rose to become a national leader, serving nearly two decades in both the National Assembly and the Senate,” he added.
Chelugui emphasized that Cheptumo, a seasoned legal professional, played a pivotal role in Kenya’s constitutional, political, and judicial reforms.
On behalf of the family, Chelugui expressed gratitude to President William Ruto, Senate and National Assembly leadership, the church, county governments, friends, and family for their heartfelt condolences to Anne Cheptumo and her family.
He mentioned that Cheptumo had been battling a health condition for some time, seeking treatment both locally and internationally.
“Despite the continuous efforts of his family, the Senate, and medical team to provide the best care, he sadly passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Nairobi Hospital,” Chelugui said.
The President mourned Cheptumo’s passing, praising him as a progressive leader dedicated to public service.
“He was vocal, hardworking, and a relentless advocate for Baringo’s transformation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cheptumo family, friends, and the people of Baringo County,” the President wrote on X.
Cheptumo, 57, was a lawyer and had served as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North from 2008 to 2013.

He was elected to the Senate in 2022 to represent Baringo County, defeating Kanu party leader Gideon Moi in the election. He chaired the Senate National Security, Defense, and Foreign Relations Committee.
Cheptumo also owned the law firm Cheptumo and Company Advocates.
