According to police reports, the officers were responding to a distress call around 1 a.m. when they were attacked. One officer was also assaulted with a machete during the incident. The fallen officer was based at Bondeni Police Station.
Following the ambush, a security operation was launched, resulting in the arrest of two prime suspects and the recovery of a firearm. Authorities say the suspects are undergoing intense interrogation, while efforts to apprehend more members of the gang are ongoing.
The injured officers are receiving treatment at Nakuru Level Five Hospital, while the deceased officer’s body was taken to the mortuary.
Police noted a recent uptick in criminal activity in the area and have deployed additional personnel to curb the rising trend. The recovered firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it has been used in other crimes.
Detectives link the ambush to an armed gang believed to be behind a string of violent incidents in the region.
Just days earlier, in a separate incident in Baraka, Menengai, a 25-year-old herder named Enock Chepkwony was shot and killed during a robbery at an M-Pesa shop. The gang injured the shop attendant and made away with Sh40,000. As they fled, they encountered Chepkwony and shot him at close range.
A spent 7.62 mm cartridge was recovered at the scene, and the attendant was rushed to the hospital. Investigations into the murder and robbery with violence are ongoing, with police keen to recover the weapon and determine if it has been used in other crimes.
