Speaking during the Ngemi Cia Watho Festival, a cultural gathering of Central Kenya lawyers celebrating their heritage, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua lamented what he termed as a historical leadership gap in the region — a gap he blamed on the limited participation of professionals in politics.

Gachagua noted that this vacuum has allowed inexperienced leaders to dominate political spaces, weakening the region’s influence. He praised Raila Odinga for setting an example through consistent and strategic political leadership in Nyanza, crediting his success to the strong presence of knowledgeable legislators from his region.

“This shows how essential it is to have professionals — especially lawyers — in leadership positions,” Gachagua said, adding that legal minds are less prone to compromise and better positioned to uphold integrity in governance.

He expressed concern over what he described as Central Kenya’s declining political strength, saying it has become difficult to defend regional interests due to a lack of capable and articulate leaders.

Gachagua also accused President William Ruto of using tribal narratives to divide the community following their political fallout. He urged residents not to fall for divisive tactics but instead to embrace unity, culture, and identity as the foundation for political revival.

Reaffirming his commitment to rebuild regional unity and representation, Gachagua emphasized that cooperation among leaders is crucial for political renewal.

Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka echoed the call, saying unity among opposition leaders and professionals was necessary to restore stability, integrity, and sanity in governance.

On his part, DP Party Leader Justin Muturi said true patriotism lies in upholding constitutional principles, not bending them for political convenience, adding that respect should be given to those who operate within the bounds of the law.
