Nairobi Roads Flooded After Heavy Friday Night Rains

Nairobi residents woke up to flooded roads and paralyzed traffic on Saturday morning, October 4, following a night of heavy rains that pounded the city.

The downpour, which began late Friday evening and stretched into the night, left several low-lying areas and major roads within the Central Business District (CBD) submerged. Motorists and pedestrians were forced to wade through stagnant water, with traffic gridlocks reported in multiple sections of the city.

The Nairobi Expressway was also affected, with flooding causing massive snarl-ups and disrupting vehicle movement for hours.

“I spent nearly two hours stuck near Nyayo Stadium because the water was too deep to drive through. The drainage here just can’t handle the rain,” lamented James Mwangi, a matatu driver.

Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria urged residents to take shared responsibility in keeping drains clear. He noted that many blockages are caused by negligence at household and business premises, even as the county continues to face criticism over poor drainage systems.

His remarks came amid an advisory from the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of intensified rainfall from Friday, October 3, through Sunday, October 5, 2025. The agency cautioned that areas around Lake Victoria, the Rift Valley, Nairobi, and parts of the Highlands would receive rainfall exceeding 20mm in 24 hours, with potential flooding and strong winds expected.

Residents were advised to remain alert to possible flooding, including in regions that may not directly experience heavy rainfall but could be affected by downstream flows.
