Met Department Issues a Heavy Rainfall Alert in Western Kenya

The Meteorological Department has put four Western region counties, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, and Vihiga, on high alert for heavy rains in May.

The forecast predicts lightning, thunderstorms, hailstones, and strong winds, along with flooding, land mudslides, and fog.

However, a few sunny and dry days may occur. The above-long-term average rainfall amounts are expected to cause flooding, land mudslides, and fog, causing poor visibility on major highways.

The county of Busia is already facing the brunt of the floods, with over 600 families displaced.

The Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary, Zacharia Njeru, announced that a team from the National Youth Service (NYS) would be dispatched within two weeks to rectify dykes in Budalang’i constituency.

The National government has distributed 400 bags of rice, 720 bags of beans, and 20 bags of fortified foods to affected victims.

A multi-agency disaster management team, including the Kenya Red Cross, UNICEF, the Kenya Meteorological Department, County Government, and other stakeholders, has provided logistical support to help flood victims.
