The most recent incident involved Johana Ng’eno, the MP for Emurua Dikirr, who was among six people killed when their helicopter went down in a forested area in Nandi North. Reports indicate that the aircraft crashed in hilly terrain during poor weather shortly after takeoff, cutting short the lives of all on board.

This tragedy is sadly part of a long history of fatal air accidents involving Kenyan officials.

On April 18, 2024, General Francis Ogolla, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, died when a military Huey helicopter crashed in Elgeyo Marakwet County. The accident also claimed the lives of nine other senior military officers and was later linked to an engine malfunction.

Earlier, on June 10, 2012, the nation mourned the deaths of two key figures in a police helicopter crash in Ngong Forest. George Saitoti, then Minister for Internal Security and a former Vice President, died alongside Joshua Orwa Ojode, the Assistant Minister for Internal Security.

Both were traveling to a fundraising event in Homa Bay County when the helicopter went down, a loss that shocked the country given Saitoti’s prominence as a presidential contender.

Four years earlier, on June 10, 2008, another air tragedy claimed the lives of Kipkalya Kones, the Minister for Roads, and Lorna Laboso, the Assistant Minister for Home Affairs. Although their deaths were caused by a fixed-wing Cessna aircraft rather than a helicopter, the incident is often recalled alongside Kenya’s helicopter tragedies due to its timing and impact on the nation’s leadership.

These repeated losses underscore the inherent risks of air travel for public officials, particularly when operating in challenging terrain and adverse weather. Each accident has not only taken lives but also left gaps in leadership and prompted calls for enhanced aviation safety measures in Kenya.

As the nation mourns MP Ng’eno and the others lost in the February 28, 2026 crash, these past tragedies serve as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the critical importance of safety in air transport.
