Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) deputy party leader Cleophas Malala has claimed that several leaders currently aligned with the Kenya Kwanza administration are weighing a move to the opposition following the party’s decisive victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
Speaking after the election, Malala said the outcome had prompted some politicians who previously supported President William Ruto’s re-election bid to rethink their political future. He alleged that a number of loyal members of the “two-term brigade” have already expressed interest in joining DCP.

According to Malala, significant political realignments are likely to begin early next year.
“It is too early in the game. The real transfer window will be from January, and you will see people shifting sides,” he said.
He added that some politicians now believe the Ol Kalou results signal changing political dynamics and are considering aligning themselves with the opposition.
At the same time, Malala acknowledged that political movement would not be limited to one side, noting that some opposition members could also decide to join the government depending on their political interests.
He argued that political leaders often make decisions based on the interests of their parties and the communities they represent, adding that alliances are expected to shift as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
The remarks follow DCP’s landslide victory in the Ol Kalou by-election, where Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru defeated UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah by nearly 30,000 votes. Waweru garnered 35,440 votes against Nyagah’s 5,450, giving DCP its first seat in the National Assembly.
The victory has intensified political debate over former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s influence in the Mt Kenya region and its potential impact on the 2027 General Election. UDA candidate Samuel Muchina later conceded defeat and pledged to work with Waweru for the development of Ol Kalou Constituency.
