Kitwai is the first officer to die in the line of duty while serving with the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS).
The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that Kitwai was part of a security team ambushed by suspected gang members during a patrol on February 23.
The officer was shot and taken to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries, the NPS reported.
The MSS stated the attack occurred while the team was conducting an operation in Ségur-Savien, located in Haiti’s Artibonite department.
The NPS has informed Kitwai’s family of his death and promised to provide support as they grieve.
In extending their condolences to the officer’s loved ones, the NPS reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace in Haiti.
“The Multinational Security Support Mission, together with the Haitian National Police (HNP), is diligently working to bring peace and stability to Haiti,” the NPS stated.
The NPS also praised the officers serving in Haiti for their dedication to the mission’s objectives.
