Kenya Recognized as Africa’s Leader in Regenerative Farming, AGRA Report Reveals

Kenya has been recognized as a frontrunner in climate-smart agriculture across Africa, according to the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) in its 2024 Annual Report.

The report credits Kenya’s success to its inclusive approach, involving multiple stakeholders in transforming dryland farming and enhancing food security for smallholder farmers. A major contributor to this progress is the Sustainable Transitioning of Agriculture for Resilient and Adaptable Kenya (STRAK) project, which has made significant advancements in climate-smart agricultural practices.

Partnered with the IKEA Foundation, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Cereal Growers Association, Farm Africa, and CIFOR World Agroforestry, the STRAK project operates in Embu, Makueni, Tharaka Nithi, and Kitui counties.

“Over 90% of farmers in the area have adopted regenerative farming practices,” the report highlights, including techniques like mulching, microdosing, and organic manure use.

The results are impressive: in Tharaka Nithi, these methods nearly tripled sorghum yields compared to traditional practices, while in Kitui, farmers saw a return of KES 5.27 for every KES 1 invested.

Kenya’s success is also attributed to supportive policies at both national and county levels. In 2024, the government integrated regenerative agriculture into broader climate and development strategies, while also addressing trade barriers and double taxation, which improved market efficiency.

AGRA President Alice Ruhweza, who took office in 2024, commended Kenya’s achievements and reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to supporting government-led agricultural reforms.

“AGRA’s work in Kenya underscores the country’s efforts to drive resilience through climate-smart farming practices, enabling smallholder farmers to restore soil health, increase productivity, and enhance long-term resilience,” she said.

The 2024 AGRA report also stressed the importance of aligning public and private investments with national goals to transform agriculture from a subsistence model into a thriving sector.

With AGRA’s headquarters based in Kenya, the country continues to lead agricultural transformation across Africa.
