Kenya Airways Renames Flight to ‘RAO001’ in Tribute to Raila Odinga

A Kenya Airways flight heading to Nairobi made a symbolic gesture in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga by adopting a special call sign — RAO001 — upon entering Kenyan airspace.

In an emotional announcement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the national carrier revealed that Flight KQ203 switched to RAO001 at around 8:50 a.m. as it crossed into Kenya’s skies.

According to Kenya Airways, the move was meant to pay tribute to the veteran opposition leader and statesman who passed away on Wednesday morning while receiving treatment in India.

“KQ203 will change to RAO001 as soon as we reach Kenyan airspace at approximately 8:50 a.m. to honour and respect our departed leader. ETA at JKIA is 9:30 a.m.,” the airline said in its statement.

The special call sign — derived from Raila’s initials — symbolizes his towering influence in Kenya’s political history and his enduring legacy as a national leader.

The flight, carrying a Kenyan delegation led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, is expected to land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 9:30 a.m. The team had departed Nairobi on Wednesday evening to oversee the repatriation of Raila’s body.

In aviation and military communication, a call sign serves as a unique identifier for aircraft or operators during transmissions. For context, the Kenyan presidential aircraft typically uses the call sign KAO1.
