Isiolo County Faces Devastating Wildfire, 190,000 Acres Burned

Isiolo County is currently battling a catastrophic wildfire that has destroyed over 190,000 acres of grassland as it enters its fifth day.

County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding confirmed that the fire has spread to the Bassa, Matarba, and Sericho areas, posing a significant threat to wildlife, livestock, and local livelihoods in the dry region.

Omoding explained that efforts to control the blaze are being hindered by strong winds and the area’s vast, rugged terrain. “The situation is critical. We are mobilizing resources and urging local communities to help with fire suppression efforts, but the fire continues to spread quickly, fueled by dry vegetation and relentless winds,” he stated.

The County Commissioner has called on humanitarian organizations to provide support, especially in terms of firefighting equipment and assistance for affected communities.

Local leaders, including Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo, have raised concerns about the long-term effects of the disaster. Dullo warned of an impending humanitarian crisis, saying, “This fire has devastated the livelihoods of our people, who are already struggling with prolonged drought. Immediate action is required to prevent further damage.”

Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stay alert and limit unnecessary movement as firefighting teams, including local volunteers and officials, continue their efforts to control the fire.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the wildfire, with speculation suggesting that human activities such as land clearing, honey harvesting, and charcoal production may have played a role.

As Isiolo continues to fight the fire, the County Commissioner is calling for unity and urgent action to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
