Internet Outages Hit East Africa Following Submarine Cable Damage

Slow internet speeds plagued East Africa over the weekend due to a significant disruption in the sub-sea fibre network, causing widespread outages in the region.

Numerous internet service providers in East Africa and South Africa grappled with connectivity issues following the damage to the underwater cable.

Efforts to restore stable internet connections were underway, with telecom leader Safaricom activating backup systems to mitigate service disruptions while awaiting full cable repairs.

Users reported sluggish Wi-Fi and cellular data speeds, prompting assurances from Safaricom of ongoing efforts to maintain connectivity despite potential slowdowns.

Ben Roberts, Group Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Liquid Telecom, noted faults in the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) and the Seacom cables, highlighting a complete loss of sub-sea capacity between East Africa and South Africa.

Additional cuts were reported in key submarine cables in the Red Sea, including Seacom, EIG, and AAE1, exacerbating the regional connectivity challenges.
