According to reports, Wamalwa did not report for her usual duties on Thursday, prompting her employers to check on her. After knocking on her locked door and getting no response, they broke in and discovered her lifeless body lying on the bed.

Police said she lived alone in a servant’s quarter located within the main house. A charcoal jiko was found next to her bed, having burned throughout the night. It’s believed she may have used it for warmth or that the incident could have been intentional.

Investigators noted that the room was poorly ventilated, with windows shut, increasing the likelihood of carbon monoxide buildup. The body was taken to the mortuary for an autopsy and further investigation.

Authorities have reiterated the dangers of using charcoal jikos in enclosed spaces. Carbon monoxide—an odourless, colourless gas—can be fatal when inhaled, as it interferes with the blood’s ability to transport oxygen. Symptoms of poisoning include headaches, dizziness, confusion, abdominal pain, nausea, and breathing difficulties.

The deceased worked for a CEO at a prominent insurance company.
