Gachagua: Only 50,000 Fertiliser Bags Substandard Out of 4 Million

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reassured the public regarding the nation’s food security amidst concerns about counterfeit fertiliser in the market, emphasizing that only a fraction of the imported stock failed to meet quality standards.

During a meeting with Kenyan residents in Rwanda, Gachagua disclosed that out of the 4 million bags of fertiliser imported ahead of the planting season, only 50,000 bags were found to be substandard. He asserted that this issue, while concerning, constitutes a negligible percentage of the total supply.

Addressing the situation, Gachagua underscored the government’s commitment to addressing the crisis, affirming that those responsible for the malpractice would face legal repercussions.

“Our security agencies have already taken action, and those involved will be prosecuted,” he stated.

Despite the setback, Gachagua highlighted the success of the government’s subsidised fertiliser programme, which has significantly contributed to improved agricultural output. He noted that the programme led to a considerable reduction in fertiliser costs, resulting in a bumper harvest last year.

Gachagua expressed optimism for continued agricultural productivity, indicating that the government’s efforts to further reduce fertiliser costs to Sh2,500 per 50kg bag would contribute to an expected maize yield of over 80 million bags this year.

Looking ahead, he emphasized the implementation of enhanced measures to safeguard the fertiliser market from fraudulent activities, asserting the government’s commitment to vigilance and accountability in agricultural initiatives.
