In a statement addressed to the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), North Horr Ward MCA and Gabra spokesperson Tura Ruru Elema emphasized that the concerns raised by professionals from Laisamis Constituency do not represent the true interests of the host community.
Elema stated that the Gabra people are the only indigenous residents of the project area and fully back the implementation of the wind power project. He warned against any efforts to rename the project, alter the planned access roads, or relocate administrative offices.
“The Gabra community is the rightful host of the Gas site, where the wind turbines will be set up. Any attempt to rename or shift project offices will be strongly opposed,” said Elema.
The letter addressed four key issues: the project’s naming, access road route, location of offices, and community involvement. Elema maintained that the project, being entirely based in Gas, should be named the Gas Wind Power Project. He dismissed proposals to change the road route as unnecessary and expensive.
He insisted that administrative operations must remain in Gas, stressing that moving them elsewhere would be both impractical and unfair to the host community.
Warning against interference from external groups, Elema asserted that only the Gabra people have legitimate claims to the land and the benefits the project promises.
“We won’t allow outsiders to hijack or delay the gains meant for the genuine hosts,” he said.
The Marsabit Wind Power Project is expected to bring employment opportunities and improved infrastructure to the region.
Gabra leaders are urging stakeholders to recognize their role as the rightful hosts and refrain from actions that could fuel division or hinder progress.
