Crocodiles claimed the lives of two individuals in separate incidents, one occurring in Mandera and the other in Lake Turkana.

In Mandera, tragedy struck when a 13-year-old was swimming in the Rhamudintu river with friends, only to be attacked and dragged away by a crocodile.

Despite efforts to rescue him, the boy succumbed to the attack. Similarly, in Lake Turkana, a 65-year-old man lost his life while bathing at the lake’s shores when he was attacked by a crocodile. His body was later discovered floating in the water, partially consumed by the predator.

These incidents mark a concerning trend, exacerbated by the increased presence of crocodiles due to heavy rains across the country.

In another recent incident, a 42-year-old man was attacked while crossing River Ewaso Nyiro, highlighting the pervasive danger posed by crocodiles in water bodies. Recognizing the severity of human-wildlife conflicts, President William Ruto launched a compensation scheme to address damages incurred.

With compensation claims amounting to billions of shillings, Ruto pledged expedited processes to ensure affected families receive compensation promptly.

Additionally, he emphasized streamlining procedures to eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy in future compensation efforts.
