The incident unfolded shortly after their arrival at a church gathering, which ended in chaos.

Witnesses reported that police launched several teargas canisters to disperse the attendees, with one reportedly landing inside Mwangaza’s vehicle while she and her husband were inside.

Mwangaza’s communications office later confirmed she and her driver were taken to hospital. The driver reportedly suffered a head injury, while Mwangaza was left unable to speak temporarily due to teargas exposure.

“This was pure intimidation,” said Nchamba Mbithi, an ally of Mwangaza. “Throwing teargas into her car during a church event is unjustifiable.”

Human rights lawyer Mugambi Imanyara, who was also present, condemned the police action as unlawful. He said legal action would be taken, emphasizing that organizers had given proper notice for the event and that there was no valid reason for police interference.

Police reportedly cited intelligence about possible tensions between rival groups, but Mwangaza’s supporters refuted this explanation, insisting the event was strictly a religious service.

Mbithi stressed, “This wasn’t a political rally. It was a peaceful church function.”

Activist Michael Makarina accused senior government officials of targeting Mwangaza for political reasons. “Deputy President, stop persecuting this woman!” he said.

Mwangaza’s team reiterated accusations of state harassment, pointing to a pattern of interference and disruption of her public appearances even after leaving office.

“No official police response has been issued,” the statement noted, adding that Mwangaza’s legal team will be filing a formal complaint soon.
