Australian Nude Beach Faces Closure Over Nudity Debate

By: CNN

A well-known nude beach in Australia is facing the possibility of closure. Tyagarah Beach, an 800-meter stretch of shoreline located north of Byron Bay, has become a topic of contention in recent weeks.

Managed by the New South Wales state government as part of the Tyagarah Nature Reserve, the beach has traditionally been a favored spot for naturists both locally and internationally. However, concerns have been raised regarding public nudity, prompting the state government to express reservations about its compatibility with the reserve’s management values.

The Byron Bay Shire Council has initiated discussions about the future of the beach as part of a broader strategy for managing the nature reserve. A crucial vote on February 22 will determine whether the clothing-optional policy at the beach will be revoked.

Reports of offensive or antisocial behavior associated with some beachgoers have contributed to the debate. Local police have been called upon to address public complaints about the beach.

Despite the proposed changes, there is opposition from some quarters. Bradley Benham, president of the Byron Naturists group, has launched a petition urging the preservation of nude recreation spaces. The petition, addressed to the New South Wales environment minister, has garnered over 1,125 signatures.

Benham emphasized the importance of designated nude bathing areas, highlighting their scarcity in New South Wales and Australia at large.

This is not the first time that Tyagarah Beach’s clothing-optional status has been under threat. In 2018, a similar proposal was rejected by the Shire Council, leading to the installation of CCTV cameras as a compromise.

Benham, who has been advocating for nude bathing rights in the area since his childhood, stressed the need for legal designated areas amid the increasing population and beach usage.

If the upcoming measure passes, Tyagarah Beach will transition to a swimsuit-mandatory policy starting from April 8.
