Airtel First in Africa to Launch Starlink Direct-to-Cell

Airtel Africa has entered into a partnership with SpaceX to introduce Starlink Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity across its 14 African markets, becoming the first large-scale satellite-to-mobile service on the continent.

The deal will allow Airtel Africa’s 174 million subscribers to access mobile services in locations without traditional network coverage, using compatible smartphones.

The service is set to roll out in 2026, starting with data access for selected applications and text messaging, pending regulatory approvals in each country.

The collaboration will also support Starlink’s next-generation Direct-to-Cell broadband technology, which relies on advanced satellites designed to deliver much faster data speeds directly to mobile phones without requiring specialised hardware.

Airtel Africa said it will be the first mobile operator in Africa to provide Starlink Direct-to-Cell services, using a constellation of around 650 satellites to expand coverage to hard-to-reach and underserved regions.

Airtel Africa Managing Director and CEO Sunil Taldar said the partnership will enhance the company’s existing ground-based networks, especially in areas where rolling out conventional infrastructure is challenging.

Starlink Vice President for Sales Stephanie Bednarek noted that the collaboration will ensure seamless connectivity in remote areas while paving the way for high-speed broadband that improves access to critical digital services.

Both companies said they will continue to explore further opportunities to work together in advancing digital inclusion across Africa.
