Tears and cries filled the Nakuru Law Courts on Thursday, February 6, as Justice Julius Nangea decided not to issue further orders in the case of missing fisherman Brian Odhiambo.

The court dismissed the case, citing insufficient evidence to confirm that Odhiambo was in the custody of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) when he disappeared.
Odhiambo’s family, including his wife and mother, were overcome with emotion after the ruling. The fisherman was last seen on January 18, 2025, the day he was allegedly detained by KWS officers at Lake Nakuru National Park. Since then, his family has spent 20 days searching for him, but their hope of finding him had been gradually diminishing.
Last week, David Oyugi, a KWS officer and assistant director of Lake Nakuru National Park, testified in court regarding the missing fisherman’s whereabouts. Oyugi confirmed that Odhiambo was arrested on January 18 but managed to escape. He mentioned that on the same day, 10 other suspects were arrested and taken to Bondeni Police Station.
“We arrested him for trespassing the park, but he escaped before we could book him, and we couldn’t identify him,” Oyugi explained, suggesting the person who escaped might not have been Odhiambo.

During cross-examination, Oyugi stated that Odhiambo fled the park vehicle after being allowed to relieve himself. The defense attorneys questioned how Odhiambo could have escaped without being handcuffed, and how he was able to run five kilometers with his hands bound. There were also claims that the suspect had been assaulted, which Oyugi denied.
