Seven Killed in Highway Collision After Trailer Loses Control

Seven people on Monday lost their lives and several others have been injured in a tragic multi-vehicle crash on the Narok-Suswa highway in Narok County.

The accident occurred at Matauro, Duka Moja, when a trailer heading from Narok to Mai Mahiu experienced a tire burst, causing the driver to lose control. The trailer struck a Toyota Premio, an Ena Coach bus, and a Narok Line matatu, causing them to veer off the road.

Two people in the matatu were declared dead at the scene. Shortly after, another trailer, also traveling from Narok to Mai Mahiu at high speed, approached the site. As it honked, the trailer collided head-on with a Toyota Prado coming from the opposite direction. Two passengers in the Prado were killed instantly, while a third passed away later at Narok County Hospital.

This tragic event underscores the ongoing concerns about road safety in Kenya, where over 4,000 people die annually in road accidents. Authorities attribute the high fatality rate to reckless driving, poorly maintained vehicles, and violations of traffic laws.

With the festive season increasing traffic on major roads, officials have renewed their appeals for drivers to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations. “The importance of discipline on the roads cannot be overstated. We urge all road users to observe traffic laws to prevent such avoidable tragedies,” the police emphasized.
