Sifuna Calls for Judiciary to Address Impunity in Wanjigi’s Arrest

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has urged the Judiciary to put an end to the disregard for court orders, following the arrest of businessman Jimi Wanjigi.

In a statement, Sifuna emphasized that there are court orders in place prohibiting Wanjigi’s arrest, which must be adhered to. He described the disobedience of these orders as a breach of the Kenyan Constitution.

Sifuna called on the Judiciary to ensure Wanjigi’s immediate release, stating, “I may not like #Wanjigi, but I respect court orders and the rule of law. Ignoring these orders is a clear violation of the Constitution. The Judiciary must address this impunity and release him promptly once he is presented before them.”

Wanjigi was detained at Kamukunji Police Station on Monday, despite having secured orders to prevent his arrest. He had been summoned to provide a statement at the Nairobi Area DCI offices, where he was arrested around 2 pm.

It has since been revealed that Wanjigi’s arrest is related to a disputed revoked Firearms license, which the Firearms Licensing Board allegedly requested him to return.

Wanjigi clarified that a 2018 court ruling invalidated the Board’s decision to revoke his firearms certificate number 5922, referencing a petition filed in 2017.

Wanjigi also noted that in November 2022, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) directed the DCI to comply with court orders regarding his firearms, a directive that he claims has not been followed.
