A counterfeit medical practitioner operating in Kayole, Nairobi County, has been apprehended for allegedly deceiving patients by running an unlicensed medical clinic while posing as a qualified medical practitioner.
James Waweru Njenga, aged 45, was seized by a team of investigators and officers from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) while at his establishment, Axis Medical Clinic & Lab Services, situated in Kayole Phase 1, following a complaint lodged by one of his patients.
As per a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, the patient had reported to the police after being incorrectly diagnosed with a liver condition and spending upwards of Ksh.60,000 on laboratory examinations last month.
“In the complaint filed, the 31-year-old male victim reported that between March 1 and March 27, 2024, Waweru billed him over Ksh.60,000 for sample tests purportedly conducted at laboratories in some of the country’s reputable medical facilities, before diagnosing him with a liver ailment,” the DCI stated.
The investigative agency disclosed that following the erroneous liver ailment diagnosis, the imposter proceeded to prescribe medications, but the patient observed that his condition appeared to worsen.
Subsequently, the patient sought a second opinion from another specialist at Nairobi West Hospital, where lab tests negated the presence of the purported condition.
“Upon investigation, detectives discovered that the medical reports issued to the patient by the fake doctor, allegedly representing lab results from German Medical Centre, Jubaland Imaging Centre, and Mater Hospital, were all fabricated and forged,” the DCI highlighted.
PPB further confirmed that the individual had no evidence of registration as a medical practitioner and lacked a business registration certificate.
The suspect is presently in custody at Kamukunji Police Station awaiting formal charges.
