Paris Saint-Germain’s French captain, Kylian Mbappe, has reportedly informed club officials of his decision to leave once his contract expires at the close of the season, according to a source close to the Ligue 1 champions on Thursday.
The 25-year-old, who joined PSG from Monaco in 2017, had previously extended his contract until 2024 but opted out of activating a clause last summer, allowing him to stay an additional year at the club.
Speculation has been rife regarding Mbappe’s next destination, with Real Madrid emerging as a frontrunner. Sources close to the matter suggest that negotiations between Mbappe and the Spanish giants are already underway.
“While the terms of the departure are yet to be finalized, an official announcement will be made by both the club and Mbappe in the coming months,” stated the source. PSG declined to comment when approached by AFP, indicating that Mbappe’s departure is imminent but formalities remain to be completed.
Despite the blow of losing their star player on a free transfer, PSG stands to benefit from an agreement reached last summer, whereby Mbappe will waive bonuses totaling approximately 60 to 70 million euros ($65.6 million to $76.6 million).
After seven successful seasons at PSG, during which he became the club’s all-time top scorer with 274 goals, Mbappe appears poised to fulfill his childhood dream of joining Real Madrid. The Spanish club’s president, Florentino Perez, has long coveted Mbappe’s signature, having made multiple attempts to sign him in previous years.
For PSG, Mbappe’s impending departure marks the start of a transitional period following the exits of Neymar and Lionel Messi, signaling the need for a rejuvenated squad under the guidance of Coach Luis Enrique.
While PSG prepares for life without Mbappe, the player himself continues to demonstrate his prowess on the field, recently scoring in PSG’s 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the Champions League. With a massive following of over 111 million Instagram subscribers, Mbappe’s departure will not only impact PSG’s on-field performance but also its global profile.
Mbappe has remained coy about his future, stating in early January that no decision had been made yet. However, as negotiations progress, the prospect of Mbappe joining Real Madrid grows stronger, potentially alongside talents like Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, and Vinicius.
Spanish media outlets are already envisioning Mbappe’s arrival at Real Madrid, anticipating a significant boost both commercially and athletically for the 14-time European champions. While challenges lie ahead, including winning over fans who may still harbor resentment from past rejections, Mbappe’s potential impact on the club’s success is undeniable.
