Six in Custody Over Stolen Cars in Machakos

Six individuals have been detained by investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Machakos County following their involvement in a theft ring targeting rented vehicles.

As per Machakos DCIO Nzioka Singi, the suspects focused on Prados and Isuzu D-max vehicles, posing as customers interested in hiring them for wedding events.

Reportedly, the suspects would rent these vehicles in Nairobi with the intent of transporting them to Machakos. Upon reaching their destination, they would lure the unsuspecting driver to a designated location under the pretext of picking up the bride.

Upon arrival, they would blindfold the driver, transfer them to another vehicle, disable the vehicle tracker, and abscond with the stolen vehicle to undisclosed locations.

Singi affirmed that, in cooperation with Interpol, they have retrieved two vehicles from Tanzania, including a Toyota Prado bearing a foreign registration plate, T443 DMW.

Of the six detained individuals, two are held in Machakos prison, while four appeared before Principal Magistrate Mary Otindo on Wednesday. Their cases are scheduled to be jointly adjudicated.

The four individuals are charged with armed robbery, accused of stealing motor vehicles with registration numbers KDH 908T and KDL 030Y on December 2, 2023, in Machakos.

Singi emphasized the prevalence of vehicle thefts from Nairobi City to Machakos since the previous year, urging those engaged in similar businesses to exercise vigilance.
