Atwoli Challenges Government Over High Living Costs and Corruption

The Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions-Kenya (COTU-K), Francis Atwoli, has accused various institutions of neglecting the nation’s dire situation.

In a public address on Wednesday, Atwoli expressed dismay over the increasing challenges faced by Kenyan workers, pointing out that the mandated institutions have remained silent.

While highlighting the primary issues confronting Kenyan workers, Atwoli called on the government to formulate effective solutions to address the high cost of living, escalating debt, high unemployment, taxation, and pervasive corruption hindering the nation’s development.

He specifically called out the National Treasury, the Directorate of Debt Management in the National Treasury, and the Directorate of Budget, Fiscal, and Economic Affairs of the National Treasury for their alleged failure to control the rising debt, high living costs, and the depreciation of the Kenyan shilling.

Atwoli questioned the effectiveness of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in combating corruption in Kenya. He also challenged the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection regarding high unemployment and frequent redundancy cases in the country.

Atwoli suggested holding these institutions accountable and even disbanding those unable to fulfill their mandates.

Furthermore, Atwoli proposed a five-point strategy to revive the nation’s declining economy. He called for effective stakeholder engagement, a robust strategy to attract investors, support for strong and inclusive institutions, emphasis on research involving both public and private entities, and a zero-tolerance approach to corruption.

In conclusion, Atwoli stressed the importance of these measures in achieving the nation’s Vision 2030 and ensuring a stable and corruption-free economy.
