President William Ruto has joined leaders across Kenya in mourning Mwalimu Jackson Karua, the father of People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, who died on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
In his condolence message, Ruto described the late Mwalimu Karua as a dedicated teacher who devoted his life to education and service, touching the lives of generations.

Ruto conveyed his condolences to Martha Karua, her family, relatives and friends, praying that God would give them strength and comfort during the difficult period.
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka also mourned Mwalimu Karua, describing him as a beloved family patriarch. He encouraged Martha and her siblings to remain strong as they come to terms with the loss.
Kalonzo said the family could draw comfort from Mwalimu Karua’s life, the values he instilled in his children and the memories they shared.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also sent his condolences, saying his family stood with Martha Karua and her siblings during the period of mourning.
Gachagua described Mwalimu Karua as an important figure in shaping the lives of those he taught and in raising his children, including Martha Karua. He said his legacy would continue through his family and the many people he influenced.
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i mourned the late teacher, describing him as a devoted father and educator whose values were reflected in his children and the people he taught.
Former Attorney General Justin Muturi also condoled with Martha Karua and her family, noting that losing a parent is a deeply painful experience. He urged the family to find comfort in the memories and legacy left by their father.
Other leaders, including former President Uhuru Kenyatta, also sent messages of condolence to the Karua family. Uhuru described Mwalimu Karua as a man remembered for his commitment to education, strong character and love for his family.
Martha Karua announced her father’s death on Sunday, saying she and her siblings had visited him in Kirinyaga earlier that day. The family spent time together and sang one of his favourite gospel hymns before she travelled back to Nairobi and received news of his death.
Karua described her father as a principled teacher and one of her strongest supporters throughout her education, legal career and public life.
