Uhuru and Ruto Handshake at DRC Congo Event Sparks Responses

After several months since the inauguration of the Kenya Kwanza administration, President William Ruto and Former President Uhuru Kenyatta were photographed shaking hands at a public gathering on Saturday.

This occurred during the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, held in Kinshasa. Tshisekedi took the oath of office at Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa on Saturday, securing over 70 percent of the total votes cast during the general elections held in December 2023, securing his re-election for a second term.

Uhuru attended the event as the Facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi Peace Process. Notably, during the inauguration, the Former President and Ruto sat a few meters apart. Their last joint appearance was during President Ruto’s inauguration in Kasarani on September 13, 2022.

The relationship between the two leaders has been strained since Uhuru chose to endorse Azimio Chief Principal Raila Odinga for the presidency instead of Ruto, whom he had initially pledged to support.
