Israel initiated airstrikes in southern Gaza following a public disagreement with the United States over the prospect of establishing a Palestinian state, which Washington views as crucial for lasting peace.
The conflict intensified in Khan Yunis, Gaza’s main southern city, where Israel alleges many Hamas members are located. Reports indicate heavy artillery fire near Al-Amal hospital, resulting in 77 deaths overnight, as per Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.
The Israeli military, engaged in close-quarters combat, stated that its Givati Brigade is operating in the southernmost area reached so far. The United Nations reports that the conflict has displaced approximately 85% of Gaza’s 2.4 million population, raising concerns about access to essential resources. The World Health Organization noted a health crisis in Gaza, citing cases of hepatitis A and jaundice due to dire living conditions.
Hamas initiated the conflict on October 7, resulting in about 1,140 deaths in Israel, with hostages taken. Israel vowed to “annihilate” Hamas, leading to a relentless offensive that has claimed at least 24,620 Palestinian lives, predominantly women, children, and adolescents.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized a pursuit of “total victory,” encompassing the elimination of terrorist leaders, destruction of Hamas capabilities, and demilitarization of Gaza.
The disagreement between Israel and the United States resurfaced this week, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken advocating for a “pathway to a Palestinian state” at the World Economic Forum. Netanyahu, however, rejected the idea, asserting Israel’s need for security control over the entire territory west of the Jordan River. The Palestinian Authority stressed the necessity of an independent Palestinian state for regional security and stability.
As the conflict escalates, there are concerns about its potential regional implications, including increased tensions on the Israeli-Lebanese border, Huthi rebel attacks in Yemen, and intensified US responses in the region.
The Iran-backed Huthis have targeted vessels in the Red Sea, linking their actions to support for Palestinians in Gaza. They claimed responsibility for another attack on a US-owned ship in the Gulf of Aden, highlighting the broader regional ramifications of the ongoing conflict.
