Two elderly men lost their lives after drowning while trying to cross a swollen River Kalundu on a motorcycle in Katulani Sub-County, Kitui County, according to witnesses and police.
The incident occurred on April 28, 2026. Police reports indicate the two were riding a motorcycle when they attempted to cross the flooded river at Mwilini village. They were overpowered by the strong currents and swept away.

Residents quickly launched a search operation, and the bodies were later found about 300 metres downstream. The victims were identified as 72-year-old Mutua Mulatya and 65-year-old Wambua Ndava.
By the time of the report, the motorcycle had not been recovered. The bodies were taken to Kitui County Referral Hospital mortuary, where postmortem examinations are pending as investigations continue.
In a separate incident in Trans Nzoia East Sub-County, the body of a 46-year-old man who had been reported missing was retrieved from River Sabwani. The discovery was made on April 28, 2026, after residents spotted a body floating in the river at Mosombor village.
Police, assisted by members of the public, recovered the partially decomposed body, which was later identified by family members as Nathan Kimeli. He had been reported missing on April 25, 2026.
Preliminary reports indicate that Kimeli was last seen on April 24, 2026, at around 6:00pm while crossing a temporary bridge linking Machungwa and Mosombor villages. Authorities suspect he may have fallen into the river due to the bridge’s poor condition.
The body was moved to Kitale County Hospital mortuary for preservation as investigations continue. Authorities have also raised concerns over the safety of the temporary bridge used by residents in the area.

In Nyeri County, another body was discovered floating in a river near Sagana Falls bridge. Police responded to the scene and confirmed the body was trapped beneath the bridge.
The identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unknown as investigations continue. The body was later moved to the mortuary.
