Brace Yourself: Matatu Prices Jump by 30%

Matatu operators have announced a 30% increase in fares effective today, April 15, following a sharp rise in fuel prices, a move set to push commuting costs higher across the country.

Speaking on Tuesday, Matatu Owners Association chairman Albert Karakacha said the decision was driven by the latest fuel price adjustments by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

In its April 14 review, EPRA raised the cost of super petrol by Sh28.69 per litre and diesel by Sh40.30, while kerosene prices remained unchanged. The new prices place super petrol at Sh206.97, diesel at Sh206.84, and kerosene at Sh152.78 per litre, effective from April 15 to May 14, 2026.

Karakacha explained that fuel accounts for a significant portion of operating expenses, leaving operators with no option but to raise fares. He noted that maintaining current rates under the new fuel prices would be unsustainable.

The fare hike is expected to impact thousands of Kenyans who depend on matatus for daily travel to work and school, adding pressure to already rising living costs.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) has also flagged a sharp increase in operational costs, particularly due to the surge in diesel prices.

In a statement issued on April 14, KTA said diesel had jumped by about Sh40 per litre — from Sh163 to Sh203 — representing a 24.5% increase. The association noted that fuel makes up roughly 55% of total road transport costs.

Based on its cost analysis, KTA estimates the fuel hike will lead to a 13–14% rise in overall transport expenses. The group warned that such increases cannot be absorbed by operators and urged members to revise their pricing structures accordingly.

KTA also advised transporters to engage clients and partners early, explaining the reasons behind the new charges to ensure transparency and maintain smooth operations.
