UoN Orders Lecturers Back to Work Despite Ongoing Strike

The University of Nairobi (UoN) has instructed its academic staff to resume work on Monday, October 6, even as the nationwide lecturers’ strike continues.

The directive follows a ruling by the Employment and Labor Relations Court (ELRC) on September 19, 2025, which suspended the strike by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA).

The court further ordered all parties to engage in a conciliation process.

In a statement signed by Prof. Ayub Gitau, the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs), the institution declared the strike unlawful.

“All students are expected to attend classes without fail, and both academic and administrative staff must carry out their duties as scheduled,” the statement read.

Lecturers at UoN have been on strike for nearly three weeks, demanding the settlement of pending Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) arrears. The unions claim the government still owes them KSh7.9 billion from the 2021 CBA.

However, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba has disputed this figure, stating that only KSh624 million remains outstanding. He explained that the government had already disbursed KSh4.3 billion between October 2024 and June 2025, another KSh2.73 billion in the 2025/2026 financial year, and committed a further KSh2.73 billion in the 2026/2027 budget cycle.

Union leaders have dismissed the CS’s explanation, insisting that the government has not provided concrete evidence of the payments.

“SRC is saying the increments were already implemented. I am asking: when exactly was the CBA effected? Show us the payslips and bank records. Don’t give us cooked figures,” UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga challenged.

He added: “We have the labour, they have the money. If they believe their figures are correct, why are they afraid of verification?”
