Gor Mahia secured a hard-fought victory over Nyanza Combined with a 2-0 scoreline in a closely contested friendly match at Nyilima grounds in Asembo, Siaya County.
The match marked the conclusion of the five-day Eliud Owalo Super Cup. Nyanza Combined comprised players selected from the four Luo Nyanza counties that took part in the inaugural Eliud Owalo Super Cup, won by Homabay Combined.
The tournament, sponsored by the Eliud Owalo Foundation, featured end-to-end action, remaining goalless for most of the match. In the 86th minute, Benson Omala, the FKF Premier League’s top scorer, scored the opening goal. A second goal within two minutes ensured the victory for Gor Mahia, the premier league leaders and defending champions. The friendly match drew enthusiastic fans.
Eliud Owalo, the patron of the Eliud Owalo Foundation and the Cabinet Secretary for Information Communication and Digital Economy, pledged to organize a more extensive tournament next year, allowing teams, including women, from the entire region to participate.
The foundation also aims to explore ways to keep the selected team from Nyanza together for future tournaments.
