Although he has been engaging with various leaders behind the scenes, Matiang’i has yet to officially announce his presidential candidacy. However, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo confirmed that Matiang’i will commence his homecoming tour in Nyasiong’o, proceeding through Keroka, Kiumbu, Kisii Roundabout, and Ikonge Market.
Nyaribo described Matiang’i as a peace-loving leader and emphasized the importance of seeking blessings and counsel from his community before making any major political declarations. He urged residents to turn out in large numbers to meet and support Matiang’i as he embarks on this crucial political journey.
In the coming days, Gusii elders are expected to formally endorse Matiang’i during a traditional installation ceremony at Gusii Stadium, an event anticipated to attract prominent national political figures.

Since his recent return to the country, Matiang’i has kept a low public profile. However, on April 29, he attended a key opposition strategy meeting in Nairobi alongside figures such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, Mukhisa Kituyi, and former CSs Mithika Linturi and Justin Muturi.

This marked Matiang’i’s first public appearance with Gachagua’s faction, part of a broader push by opposition leaders to forge a united front in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. Sources indicate that Matiang’i prefers private consultations as he tests the political waters.
