Football enthusiasts in Busia are calling on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to organize training sessions and refresher courses for club officials and referees involved in holiday tournaments, aiming to elevate the quality of soccer in the region.
Expressing their views at Butula Polytechnic during the Engineer Kwena tournament, Christian Nyongesa, the tournament manager, emphasized the need for FKF to prioritize grassroots training for referees and coaches. The goal is to reduce errors and ensure strict adherence to football rules and standards.
Nyongesa urged coaches to follow FIFA rules diligently, emphasizing that this approach is essential for shaping future successful athletes who can adapt to any governing regulations.
“In these festive tournaments, we observe a significant number of errors from both coaches and referees, stemming from a lack of awareness of football rules. Hence, our plea to FKF to retrain officials,” stated Nyongesa.
The Engineer Kwena tournament featured 27 teams from Butula Sub-county, including 8 girls’ teams and 19 men’s teams. Bumala B FC claimed the men’s title, defeating Simuli Youths FC 1-0 in an engaging final that drew a sizable crowd.
Bonface Odour’s solo goal in the 35th minute secured Bumala B’s victory, showcasing tactical discipline in their defensive line.
In the women’s category, Butula Starlet triumphed over Bumutiru Queens with a 1-0 score, maintaining their unbeaten record in the tournament.
Engineer Kwena appealed to the Busia County Government to invest in football infrastructure and allocate necessary funds to clubs participating in the county league and beyond.
“It is time the county government recognizes talents by establishing modern sports facilities that will expose our sportsmen and women, nurturing their talents,” emphasized Engineer Kwena.
Acknowledging Busia as a football hub that has produced legends and rising stars, Kwena highlighted the county’s potential, citing their success in the Talanta Hela championship.
The Butula select team is set to face premier league club Kakamega Homeboiz and Division 2 team Mayenje Santos before January 8th.
