A 20-year-old university student lost his life on Friday after being buried under a heap of soil while harvesting sand in Nyatike Sub-county, Migori County.
The deceased, identified as Hoctive Ochieng, was a student at the Technical University of Mombasa. According to police, he was working alongside two friends when a mound of soil unexpectedly caved in, trapping him beneath the debris.

Ochieng suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Crime scene investigators visited and documented the area before the body was moved to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.
Authorities noted that similar accidents are common among sand harvesters in the region, often due to inadequate safety measures and lack of protective equipment.
In a separate incident, police in West Pokot County are investigating the death of a nine-month-old baby boy in what is suspected to be a poisoning case in Misitin Village, Kipkomo Sub-county.
Police reports indicate that the child’s mother left him in the care of her husband at around 11:30 a.m. on June 12 while she went to fetch water. Upon returning, she allegedly found the infant unconscious and vomiting a white, foul-smelling foamy substance.
The family rushed the child to a nearby hospital, but he died before receiving medical attention.
Officers who visited the home conducted a search and recovered two 100ml bottles of acaricides, identified as Triatix and Actraz, from a locked metallic box inside the house. The substances were seized for forensic examination as detectives seek to determine whether they played a role in the child’s death.
The infant’s body was transferred to the Kapenguria Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Police have identified the child’s stepfather as the primary suspect and say investigations remain ongoing as they await forensic and postmortem findings.
